Pairing Investment Policy and Sustainability Studies for Long-Term Success

Effective capital planning is critical to sustaining an ESOP for the long term. This session brings together a banker, an ESOP consultant, and an ESOP company CFO to explore how coordinated cash flow forecasting, repurchase planning, and thoughtful investment strategies can strengthen both the company’s financial growth and the long-term health of the ESOP.

We’ll start with when and why an ESOP company might implement a corporate-level investment policy. Since the need depends heavily on whether meaningful cash is expected to build on the balance sheet, we’ll review common sources and uses of corporate cash and how a sustainability study can clarify the timing and magnitude of future capital claims. From there, the panel will outline a framework for developing an investment policy, including how to balance reinvesting in the business with returning cash to shareholders.

As a bonus, we’ll discuss why even companies flush with cash should consider a sustainability study—board-level choices around distribution policies and repurchase methods can create significant differences in outcomes between active and terminated participants, and between newer and longer-tenured employees.

To wrap up, attendees will participate in small-group breakouts to exchange practical strategies for applying these concepts in their own organizations.
